Jeep Cherokee Sensor Problem?

I have an apparent sensor problem with my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic, 4.0 liter, automatic. Engine will turn over but will not crank. Engine light is on, fuel and battery gauges aren't working, all other electrical and fuses are okay. Was told it was either a malfunctioning CRANKshaft position sensor or possible CAMshaft positioning sensor. My question is which of these two sensors is causing the problem? Trying to determine which to replace. Thank you.

I think the crankchaft sensors go bad more often than the camshaft sensors. sounds like you could have blown a fuse though. Check the fuses in the engine compartment. This happened to me once when the O2 sensor wire touched the exhaust and shorted out. I recently replaced a crankshaft sensor on my other jeep as well. It's pretty easy, just 2 bolts.

There is an easy way to check... There should be 3 wires o the sensor, +12V, 0V, and the sensor output +5V. You can press needles into the connector while it is plugged in to check the voltage with a multimeter, just make sure the needles don't touch each other!! If you have someone watch the multimeter while the engine is turned, the voltage should change or flash. If there is no change at all and it sits at a steady voltage, the sensor is bad.

First off, the engine turning over is cranking. It isn't firing. This wording is VERY important when trying to diagnose a problem without seeing the vehicle. The fix, is the crankshaft position sensor. It is a common failure on this particular engine. The sensor is a little pricey, but worth it.

do the crank sensor first

If the gages are out too then it is most likely the ground wire for the ECU at the back of the block has broken.
