Sounds like one of the cylinders is missing. Could be almost anything, but the easiest would be to change the spark plugs. Just the bad one if you can find it or all of them if you have changed them for some time .

A shop can run a scan on that engine light and tell you shat the problem is.

Tomorrow try shifting into neutral when you stop and keeping your foot ever so slightly on the gas.

Take your Jeep to AutoZone, AdvanceAuto, or similar. They will scan your Jeep's computer to see what that engine light indicates. That will give you a good start on locating the issue. I had a '95 Grand Cherokee which did the same. Heh, the solution was a transmission fluid change (I neglected to handle that service issue). However, with my issue, the check engine light did not appear, so I am guessing that your problem is not transmission fluid.

From your comments, your issue could be ignition, fuel supply, just to mention a few possibilities.

sounds like a misfire. when was the last tune up? take it to your mechanic and have them scan the engine light. they're pretty bullet proof trucks (i have a 96 laredo)

Try dumping the OBD codes from the computer. Go here to find out how to do it:
