I was thinking of getting a wrangler, around 2000 and getting it converted to LPG to save on fuel costs and the environment. What do you think about this, is it possible, or a good idea, any advice appreciated and how much would it cost,
thanks

Yes you can (as long as its petrol) and a gassed jeep is a great proposition. My 4.0 Grand cherokee has proved very reliable, and very cost effective to run. The fuel tank has been removed and a smaller (5 gallon) petrol tank installed with the LPG tank next to it. That way you lose no interior space. I get 170 miles locally and 220 miles motorway for £30 gas. If I ever run out of gas the car runs on petrol. It is VERY important to get the conversion done professionally by an LPG approved converter. Shoddy conversions cost more in the long run as they can cause engine damage if not set up properly. I use a place in Exeter (Gas power UK, 01392 879290). Gas IS better for the environment, there are no nitrogen oxides for a start (causes acid rain) and much fewer other harmfull gasses come out of the car. Also, many LPG converted vehicles are exempt from the london congestion charge, which could save you the cost of conversion in no time on its own!

yes if it is petrol, probably only worth it on the v8's, ignore the previous guy, lpg doesn get better mpg infact it is worse than petrol but you save because of the price per litre. also to take into account is the power loss, you will not get the same power from the engine as you do on petrol. as for tanks they come in toloidal {round like a wheel and fits in the spare wheel wel} great for any size car but obviously no good for a jeep as they dont have a wheel well. and cylindrical {can be bolted in or under the vehicle} which is ideal for jeeps, vans and other high ground clearance vehicles as there is generally plenty of space between the chassis legs but you do need to work out a comfortable tank size/room available ratio.

its a fun idea but very impractical....in the early 80s we changed over about a 100 school buses for our local district to lpg because of the fuel crisis....and they were carb..not fuel injection...with the cost of change over parts ... and labor ...you could drive your jeep for a long time...we don't know where u live, but here lpg gas price per gal is almost the same as gasoline ,so... u wont save any money..another drawback... do you plan on keeping this jeep forever?...it will be a hard sell converted.....also....if u live in a cold climate area ...lpg vehicles unless you install a heater for the system...don't like to start on cold days.....its agood thought(environmentally speaking) but not worth it (monetarily speaking) stick with the gasoline......(PS most of the buses they wanted changed back to gasoline within the next two years)

It can be done to any gasoline engined vehicle. The LPG tank is going to take a big bunch of space which is why you usually only see it on pickups. I don't suspect it's really much more environmentally friendly but it does get a bit better mileage.

Yes and you can do it to petrol or diesel cars Well worth it in the long run but you need to keep the car for a while to get your moneys worth. It does not give better mpg infact slightly less but the fuel costs less to buy. They do not usually bring any more money at the time of sale. all i can say is if you can't afford to run the car do not buy it!
