will a performance chip in my jeep wrangler help gas mileage?

I have a 2002 Jeep wrangler X lifted 4" with 33" tires, I get probablly the worst gas mileage ever.. I have cold air intake and exhaust... will a performance chip actually help my mileage or will it just give more power and in turn make it worse.. I have no clue... if it does what kind should I get with the mods I have already?

it might help it a little but i don't think it's worth the trouble.

Your engine sucks in air, the more air (intake) and fuel (chip) in and the quicker the exhaust gets out (exhaust) the more power, the basic idea but there is more to it. If your chip is a performance chip its goal would be to make more power by telling the engine it can use more air and gas. So it would be safe to assume you would get less mileage because of you "upgrades". Some will say it makes the engine work better and get better mileage. Even if they all those up grades work it wouldn't lead better mileage but some say it does.

This is an on going debate. I have been there done that, but with a different vehicle. For me mileage didn't change, performance charged for the better with intake and exhaust, went down with the chip.

If you re-gear your jeep so it runs like it did with stock tires, your mileage and performance will improve. That I did do on my jeep and it works, but it will cost you more than some chip.

Face it, your ride is a "JEEP". It is geared for low 4 x 4 'ing, not the highway. Just what are your RPM's on the highway at say 60? 2500-2800 probably? Your rig is low geared which means the engine is always going to rev higher = more gas used in commuting vs. off roading where the RPM's might be in the 500-1500 range. A performance chip is typically to improve "performance"....I've got one on my F250 Diesel Crew Cab and my 04 Vette. I've got the intake gap and a high flow breather on my 02 Wrangler Sahara. HOWEVER, I also run Royal Purple oil in it and that has seemed to help gas mileage just a little. BTW, I run Mobile One in the Vette but that is a little cost prohibitive in the Jeep, hence the Royal Purple, which is also a synthetic. Give that a try and while you won't go from 15 MPG to 25, you might stretch it to 16-17 especially if you ease off the pedal just a bit on the highway. If all else fails and you're going broke via your gas bill, get a PRIUS. Ouch, that one hurt!

ohh ive done this before i used to have a 01 4'' lift a 33s not good gas mileage at all. a chip might get you 1 or 2mpgs but i doubt it. i sold my wrangler and bought a cj5 with a v-8 (everyone is saying im crazy right) only difference is its got 31'' on it get the same gas mileage as my wrangler.(i think thats good for a v-8) nothing we can do about it GAS PRICES SUCK

A performance chip is not gonna give you better gas mileage, unless you get one that is gonna remap your ECU and give you less fuel usage = less power. I'm sure you don't want less power! With 33" tires and a Jeep, gas mileage really can't get that much better. Maybe you can do some engine tuning though and get a little better efficiency and mpg, but thats usually really expensive to do, so it cancels out whatever you would have said instantly.

It all depends on how the chip adjusts the torque curve of your Jeep. More often than not, a chip will decrease gas mileage, because the whole point of a performance chip is just that: higher torque to produce more power. And as the saying goes, the more horses, the more hay.

I would say shy away from a chip. Unless you can find one that'll adjust your torque to a lower low-end torque setting.

Get rid of the lift kit and the 33' tires will help performance and gas mileage more than any chip will.
