hi, have a 2003 jeep grand cherokee and the computer is throwing code P0601-PCM Internal Controller Failure (possible powertrain control module). However, my mechanic finds no problem with the jeep - it runs fine but the check engine light keeps coming on and throwing the code. is he missing something or is this preparing me for eventual failure? the jeep only has 80k miles

The problem is the PCM. A p0601 means that the PCM has picked up a problem internally. It might not affect anything right now but it could cause problems later. The only way to fix it is to have the PCM replaced and the only one who could do that is the dealership.

PS if you have a key with the thick grey end(SKIM) then a used PCM will not work.

I would have the pcm replaced. Since the pcm is used to control emission components, its probably under an 8 year 80,000 mile warranty. Its worth a try.

Do a Google/Yahoo search for "2003 jeep grand cherokee+code issue" and that should give you some jeep repair sites.
