I have been having stall issues and intermittent loss of power in my 1997 jeep grand cherokee laredo.
A diagnosis came up with code 43 po351,which is misfires and ignition coil problems,i thought?
I brought it to this mechanic this past friday and he says its the wiring harness because they are covered in oil,i guess from an oil leak?He claims the oil is going to the ignition connector.
But today i went to see him and the code 43 is gone and now its a code 54,which is camshaft position sensor DISTRIBUTOR SYNC PICKUP??
What is this and could this be causing the 43 code or the Po351 thing?
What are the chances its really the wiring harness to the ignition connection, like he thinks?
Im really confused, the jeep wont turn over now.
The funny thing is,the engine light started just today.
Could the camshaft sensor been causing this issue all along but the check engine light never went on until it completely went bad, which was today?
Its now throwing a code 54--PO340,which is cam sensor?

The camshaft position sensor are know to fail in jeeps and they will not start. If you still have an oil leak likely form the valve cover get it fixed, oil can damage the distributor and its related parts.

Sometimes the comp systems don't detect a fault for sometime and yes it could be that suddenly the sensor went and now it won't start and the comp system detected the problem. If the same wiring harness feeds the coil and the camshaft sensor and it has any bare wires etc the moister might be causing the codes and the no start issue.I believe that the harness you're talking about is the engine harness and if so this harness feeds a lot of different sensors.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way unless the harness has a brake or opening in it the oil shouldn't affect it, also you must have a oil leak if oil is all over it.Try lightly tugging or moving the harness and then try starting it and if it starts up etc you know the harness must have a problem. Also if possible try to get another opinion or diagnose bec some harness's are quite expensive to buy and can take several hours to replace. You could also get a used harness from a U pull wreck for around 50-100 bucks and simply replace it, there isn't much to some harness's unless it goes inside the engine then it be a big job.

May be a faulty ignition coil or a defective PCM (power control module) or ECM (engine control module)

which is the vehicles computer. I have had experience with defective pcm modules loosing the ground

internally which will not allow the vehicle to start. The least expensive route is to have the ignition coil

tested first.
