Select Trac II vs Command Trac II on new / late model Jeep Liberty?

Question

I know both systems are part-time, shift on-the-fly 4WD.

Command Trac always was and still is 2WD + 4WD Part Time.

Select Trac *used to be* 2WD, 4WD Part Time *OR* 4WD Full-Time.
(You could put it in 4WD Full Time and never touch it again OR you could switch between all three.)

Is this how Select Trac still is?

Talked with a Jeep salesman who didn't know his posterior orifice from a hole in the ground.
- Kept saying 'you can put it into 4 wheel drive any speed below 50 mph'.

Yeah.
I know that.

What I want to know is with Select Trac, if I am going in and out of crappy conditions, can I put it in 4WD full time (so I don't f-it up by using 4WD on dry pavement) and then when it gets continuously bad, then put it into 4WD part time ?

Summary: Does Select Trac II have both 4WD Full-Time and 4WD Part-Time options?

Yes, Selec-Trac is still like that - 4HI, 4LO, 4Fulltime, & 2WD. Selec-Trac is currently only available in the Liberty.



And yes, you can shift into 4Fulltime any time you want to, regardless of your speed or road conditions.



I work at a Jeep dealer and your comparison between the salesman's posterior orifice and the hole in the ground was hilarious, as well as right on the money. With a few exceptions, most of them don't really know their product. (I recently asked one of them where the subwoofer was in the Wrangler, because I am thinking of adding one to my own Wrangler. He had no idea and I ended up getting the answer from the lot jockey who drives them all the time.)



Take my advice and ask the service department the next time you have a question that has to do with anything remotely mechanical. Chances are they'll know the answer, and if they don't, they'll get the answer for you.
