I was told when I bought it that I should just use the lower octane gas.

Jeep Cherokees are low-compression engines that will run fine off of any grade of unleaded fuel sold in America. For your wallet's sake, the cheapest would be preferable.
Higher octanes only benefit high-compression sports engines that put gasoline under so much pressure that it can actually start to explode before the spark plug ignites it. Higher octane helps to prevent this process of pre-detonation. For your Cherokee, however, this is not a concern.

Hello,
My 92 Cherokee runs fine on regular gas. Using higher octane gas will not help with performance, and will hurt your wallet.

The owner's manual specifically states that the Jeep will run best on 87 octane, aka regular grade gasoline.

Stock engines only require 87 octane. Modified engines may require a higher octane if it knocks with 87 octane.

ok first fill up with best at place you always stop at set mileage or write it down drive til you need to refill and use next lower octane write down mileage one that gets you the most miles the right one to use at that place and then fill up at place you sometimes stop at and do same then you wil know two brands not all gas is the same and not all driver drive the same way and gas varies from state to state its like my nissan gets great mileage with shell high octane but gets same from mobil regular so its something one as to test for to know which gets the best mileage
