ok so next fall after i work all summer im either looking at buying a 1999-2004 model limited jeep grand cherokee, or a 2002-2006 model chevy trailblazer. Now dont even recommend a foreign vehicle or getting a car because i live in north dakota and i need something that is still good in the winter. Everyone says there both good vehicles and the jeep has a 4.7 v8 with all wheel drive and the trailblazer has a 4.2 v6. im not to concerned with how many miles are on it but im in high school still and im wondering like gas mileage, comfortability, quietness, good riding, room for passengers, on and off road pros and cons, you know all that kind of stuff. only serious answers please. Thanks

the jeep has many problems, and is well known for electrical issues as well, It also has underpowered engines that do not hold up to high mileage well. The trailblazer is a much better choice, many people make the mistake of picking a 6 cylinder engine thinking they will save gas. This is not the case, and none of chevy six cylinders hold up well to high mileag. the small v8 the 5.3 does excellent for a fairly heavy vehicle and will go hundreds of thousands of miles . chevrolet had some isues with torque converters and transmissions in the late 90s so a late model trailblazer should be fine, and if you want a unique trailblazer, try the 400 horsepower ss.

Everyone definitely does NOT say that they are both good vehicles. Look up reviews for each one, and look at the recalls for each. Not everyone is a happy owner. The Jeep is complete garbage, as previously stated they have lots of issues. The Trailblazer SS is not good off road because of its lowered ride height and sportier tires, among other things. Don't be biased against foreign made cars/trucks, because more often than not, an "American" vehicle is almost always built outside of the United States, or at least it consists of imported parts. The Silverado is an exception, but that is a truck and not an SUV. If you want the ultimate off road SUV, then seriously consider a '90s Land Rover. I know what you're thinking (but it's foreign....) well correct that negative thinking because a Land Rover is superior to any "American" SUV hands down. They offer better build quality, they have hill decent control as will as hill climb assist, and you can find them for cheap ('99-'01 can be had for less than $9k with average miles). The Land Rover Range Rover is excellent. Just because it is of a foreign brand does not mean that it's a bad vehicle. Don't knock it until you try it, because you'll see that the Jeep or Chevy can't hold a candle to it!

As a Jeep owner for the past two years, I can tell you this... Jeeps are complete garbage! They should all be taken off the road and crushed at a local junkyard. As for "inexpensive issues to repair" what a complete lie. Jeeps are nothing but money pits... "Just Empty Every Pocket" And the Jeeps made by Chrysler, please, gimmie a break----friggin' Tonka toys. They're complete junk. I can't wait to sell mine to some unsuspecting fool.

Ok where to start... I say the Grand Cherokee would be the best choice

As for Jeeps being garbage. While they do have issues, just as any vehicle including Land Rovers, the issues they do have are usually easy and cheap to repair....unlike a Land Rover, which happens to British not American. Didn't you say "Don't Even Recommend a Foreign Vehicle"? Also Check out the prices for said Land Rovers.

Ok I am going to post a few links and then give my .02 worth of advice.

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/searchresults.jsp?position=top&position=top&systime=&doors=&model=TRAILBLZ&search_lang=en&start_year=1981&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&search_type=used&highlightFirstMakeModel=&distance=0&min_price=&rdm=1296485676417&drive=&marketZipError=false&advanced=&fuel=&keywords_display=&end_year=2006&lastBeginningStartYear=1981&showZipError=y&make3=ROV&make2=JEEP&certified=&engine=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&body_code=0&transmission=&default_sort=newsortbyprice_DESC&max_mileage=&model3=RANGE&color=&address=57101&model2=JEEPGRAND&sort_type=mileageDESC&rdpage=100&awsp=false&max_price=&num_records=100&seller_type=b&make=CHEV (This is an auto trader search for the Jeep, Trailblazer and Land Rover sorted by highest mileage, you have to go down 12 to get to the first Trailblazer and 25 to find the first Land Rover)

Ok so here it goes: You mentioned that you want something that is reliable (again check out the high mileage link. If there are a plethora, yes I said plethora, of Jeeps over 200K and 300K with one over 700K that has to say something.

Maintenance: I understand being in school and having a limited budget so that is another reason why I say the Jeep is the best option. There are so many good forums out there for all platforms of Jeeps you are bound to get the help you need. http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/ (Grand Cherokee sub forum), http://www.nagca.com/ (Grand Cherokee only forum) and http://wjjeeps.com/ (specific to the WJ or 1999-2004 Grand Cherokee. I am active on all these forums and have used these forums to diagnose problems, help with repairs etc. I just did a quick google search and found 2 Trailblazer forums and a few Land Rovers ones as well. But like any any foreign vehicle parts and repair of a Land Rover will be expensive.

You also mentioned engines. I will say Jeeps are not known for gas mileage, neither is the Land Rover. In fact the Land Rover has the lowest MPG out of all three even when you compare the V8 Jeep. But I would recommend the 6 cylinder Motor every mpg is money in your pocket. Here is a side by side comparison http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm

As for the offroad/comfort/and room. My friend had a Trailblazer and we all went camping up near Shoe Creek VA ( http://www.google.com/search?q=shoe+creek+va&tbo=p&tbs=vid%3A1&source=vgc&hl=en&aq=1&oq=shoe+creek ) and when he was worried about one of the water crossings being too deep he jumped in the Grand Cherokee. He said that it was way roomier and more comfortable than his. I never got a chance to ride in it before he sold it for a Grand Cherokee but it must have made an impression. Sorry the only Land Rover I have been in/driven was a Defender 90 and that rode like a tank on the road...but that is in a class by itself.

Ok that was more like $1.02 worth of input but hopefully it helps..
