In between the two front seats will be the transmission shifter, ie Park, Reverse, Drive). To the left of that shift, is a smaller, additional lever. On that smaller lever you will find 2W 4W N and 4L. You use that second smaller lever to shift in and out of 4 wheel drive. Shift while stopped. It will go into 4 wheel drive as you start moving.

All the following answers are correct about a shifter lever in your jeep but is it a 4X4? WJ and XJ in that model year were available as a 2 wheel drive. Just a question nobody mentioned yet.

Your Selectrac has shift on the fly capabilities, and it actually works better to shift it while moving to prevent it getting stuck. You can shift it at speeds up 55mph. I always found over 20 worked best. Shift into 4wd Fulltime for on road use or 4wd Part Time under VERY snowy conditions or for off roading in muddy slippery conditions. Never use 4wd Part Time on dry pavement or in light snow or rain.

Look on the floor. Between the seats is an additional shifter that will say 2WD, 4H as in High. N as in Neutral, and 4L as is low. Put the vehicle in neutral on your regular shifter and put your foot on the brake. Then go to the secondary shifter and put it in either 4 high or 4 low for whatever your application may be and drive. To take it out do the same thing by going into neutral on your regular shifter and foot on brake and put it back into 2 wheel drive. It is always a good idea to run through the 4WD about once a month to keep things in good working order. Its like excersize for your 4WD's mechanical parts. Also i know it feels like its hard to shift it into 4wd on the shifter but thats normal, you just have to give it a good pull and it will go in gear.
