My dad just bought a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, and I was sitting in the driver seat, I saw a second shift knob, which I knew engaged the 4WD, but it said 2H, 4H, N and 4L. What does that mean? Does the numbers mean how many wheels are engaged?

Putting the transfer case in 2H means power is sent to the rear axle only, and the transfer case will be at 1:1 (or close) for normal driving. 4H and 4L will send power to both the front and rear axles, and since this is part-time 4wd, you don't want to use these in normal on-road conditions unless there's low traction - you can damage the driveline. 4L will be a different ratio, often 2:1 or 4:1, though there are other ratios that are used, used for low speed and high torque. N is neutral.

After noticing a second lever in the new jeep a family member has purchased as you know it is the transfer case lever. What you don't really know is what the positions mean, in 2H all the power is sent to the rear axle, 4H some of the power is diverted to the front axle, in 4L a gear reduction takes place in the transfer case, in N no action takes place.

2H - Rear wheels have all the power
4H - All wheels have power
4L - All wheels have power, but gear ratio is smaller. It's for climbing slowly
N - Nuetral

Jeeps have all wheel drive, low and high range. 2H is second gear in high range, 4H is fourth gear, N is neutral and 4L is fourth gear with low range.

If your father is asking this question also...he needs to sell the Jeep and get a Prius.

Leave it alone.
It should stay in 2H.

School must be out, since you didn't even THINK to READ the OWNER'S MANUAL.
